FSC® International has a strategy for FSC Mix products and Controlled Wood. This strategy states that the text in the FSC MIX label should be adapted. Certificate holders have until 30 June 2024 to adapt their MIX labels, but existing stock may be used up. In addition, the wording of Controlled Wood has been adjusted.

What has been adapted to the MIX Label?

The text in the FSC MIX label has been changed. The original text was "from responsible forestry". The new text is "supporting responsible forestry". This only applies to the extended label which includes all the text, the so-called "mini labels" remain the same.

Why this adjustment?

Products carrying the FSC MIX label are made from a mix of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials and or Controlled Wood material. In the original wording, it seemed that all these materials were responsible, while for both recycled and Controlled Wood this is questionable. It was therefore decided to change the wording to "Supporting responsible forestry". Of course, the product specification should still be mentioned.

How to act now?

Group members of DuraCert can download the new labels via the label wizard in My DuraCert. Please note that a new label approval must also be requested for all new applications. Again, you can do this under Labels in My DuraCert.

Individual certified companies can download the new labels via the FSC Trademark portal. Here, approvals of new designs must be requested directly from the certification body.

Statements on Controlled Wood

FSC-certified organisations are allowed to give explanations about Controlled Wood when selling. To prevent everyone coming up with their own explanation of this, new standard statements have been drawn up:

  • FSC® controlled wood mitigates the risk of forest products originating from unacceptable sources (fsc.org/en/cw)
  • FSC® controlled wood mitigates the risk of forest products originating from unacceptable sources. FSC controlled wood requirements prohibit and are designed to avoid: illegally harvested wood, wood harvested in violation of traditional and human rights, wood from forests with threatened high conservation values, wood from forests with genetically modified trees and wood from forests converted to plantations or non-forest uses. For more information on FSC controlled wood see fsc.org/en/cw.
